Configure Abandon for Designer Express

Designer Express provides two facility editing tools: Remove and Abandon. These tools are NOT the same as the ArcFM Abandon tools. They are specific to Designer Express.

  • The Abandon tool marks the feature for abandon and symbolizes with an Abandon DFC.

  • The Remove tool marks the feature for deletion and symbolizes with a Remove DFC.

Configure Abandon

To use these tools, they must first be configured. Both tools look for the MMABANDONABLE model name which is used when configuring ArcFM Abandon. While the Designer Express Abandon tools are NOT the same as the ArcFM Abandon tools, the configuration is similar. Follow the instructions in the Configure ArcFM Abandon Tool section to configure the geodatabase. Be sure to assign the MMABANDONABLE model name to the features (not DFCs) you wish to abandon or remove. You can use any one of the following configurations, but note you must configure Abandon (not Abandon and Remove).

When the user uses the Designer Express Abandon or Remove tools to select a feature on the map, that feature is replaced with a DFC that has the appropriate work function assigned (Abandoned or Removed).

IMPORTANT: Be sure to configure the Abandon functionality (using MMAbandoned and MMAbandonable model names). If you configure Abandon and Remove functionality (using MMRemoved and MMRemovable model names), the Designer Express Abandon functionality will not work.

Determine Cut Points

Designer Express Abandon uses cut points to isolate the area to be abandoned. In this step you will use the DFC_CUT_POINT model name to identify the design feature class(es) you want to be used as cut points.

The ArcFM Abandon tools use the Cut and Trim tool, but this tool does not work with Designer Express Abandon.

  1. Select the feature (or features) you want to be used as cut points (e.g., NonControllableFitting).
  2. In ArcCatalog, right-click the cut point DFC and select ArcFM Properties Manager.
  3. On the Model Names tab, assign the DFC_CUT_POINT model name. By default, this model name is added to the Designer Object Class Model Name domain.
  4. Click OK to dismiss the ArcFM Properties Manager.

Splitting Complex Edges

If the line on which the cut points will be placed (i.e., the line you wish to isolate) is a complex edge, then you must assign the ArcFM Segment Split AU to the feature class the represents the cut point. Follow the steps below to complete this configuration. If you're splitting simple edges, then no further configuration is needed.

IMPORTANT: Note that you are assigning the autoupdater and the model name to the feature classes and not the Design Feature Classes (DFCs).
  1. In ArcCatalog, right-click the linear feature class (not the DFC) that will be split by the cut points and select ArcFM Properties Manager.
  2. Select the Model Names tab and assign the SPLITTARGET model name. By default, this model name resides in the Domain Independent Object Class Model Name domain.
  3. Click OK.
  4. In ArcCatalog, right-click the cut point feature class (not the DFC) and select ArcFM Properties Manager.
  5. Select the Object Info tab and assign the ArcFM Segment Split autoupdater to the On Feature Create event.  
  6. Click OK. 

Set Symbology

You will need to edit the symbology in ArcMap to ensure you can see the difference between abandoned and non-abandoned features on the map. If you do not edit the symbology, you will not be able to see which features have been abandoned. You may wish to refer to a page in the Using Guide called Add Abandon Symbology to the Map.
