Configure Address Search and Direction Search

The ArcFM Address Search and ArcFM Direction Search tools use Esri address locators to locate specific address information in the map. At ArcMap 10.5.1, Esri discontinued support for creating new address locators that reside inside the geodatabase. Because the ArcFM Address tools require a locator inside the geodatabase, new address locators are not supported by ArcFM at the 10.6.1 version.

However, please be aware of the following:

  • Address locators that existed in the geodatabase prior to upgrading to 10.6.1 continue to work.

    • These pre-existing locators cannot be seen in ArcCatalog but can still be found and used by the ArcFM Address tools within ArcMap.

    • These pre-existing locators cannot be updated or altered.

  • New address locators can still be created in ArcCatalog, but they cannot be placed inside a geodatabase for use by the ArcFM Address tools. Instead, they can be referenced by the Esri Find tool, which is helpful when disconnected from the internet.

    • If connected to the internet, the Esri Find tool provides built-in geolocating capabilities (even with partial addresses or intersections) that do not require an address locator.

You might be wondering why this dita task has no steps. This used to have steps to actually configure the address locator. However, since geodatabase-stored locators were deprecated as explained above, those steps didn’t make any sense anymore. However, on fuse there was discussion about possibly offering a solution to this issue in the future, and if that happens, the steps would go here. So, it seemed better in the long run to keep this as a task, instead of converting to a topic only to have to convert back to a task. sauer 11/20/2018
