Mobile Designer

This implementation provides the field designer with almost all of the same functionality as the enterprise user. While in the field, the designer add features or graphics to a design. In most instances, the field designer will receive designs from the enterprise user. However, Mobile Designer also provides the ability to create designs and work requests in the field.

The only ArcFM functionality NOT available to the field designer is Phase Swap. This tool is not currently supported in a Mobile environment.

Configuration (refer to Mobile Configuration Guide): Mobile Designer

Required ArcFM Licenses in the Field: Designer

Required Esri Licenses in the Field: ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced

Field Databases: Backdrop, Login (optional), Process Framework (e.g., Workflow Manager)

The following work flow is an example. Your work flow may vary.

  • Open Workflow Manager: The Open Workflow Manager button on the Workflow Manager toolbar opens the Workflow Manager application and allows you to send, receive and view designs.

  • Retrieve Mobile Designs (optional): If your administrator has configured Geodatabase Replication to automatically send and receive designs, this step is not necessary. Otherwise, execute the the Send/Receive Mobile Data task to retrieve data from the enterprise. This task requires a network connection.

  • Create Work Request/Design (optional): In most instances, designs are created on the enterprise and sent to the field. However, the Redliner extension provides the field designer with the ability to create work requests and designs in the field.

  • Open Design: With a design selected in Workflow Manager, execute the Open Design task to open it for design editing.

  • Navigate/Query Map: While designing in the field, all Designer tools (e.g., Locator, Identify, Tracing) are available to the user (with the exception of the Phase Swap tool). It is critical to remember that backdrop data cannot be edited in the field.

  • Place and Edit Features: The field editor can use the Features tab to place features  and edit them.

  • Place Graphics: Place graphics on the map using the Graphics tab. You may use the Active Annotation Target list to select the annotation layer in which graphics are stored (must be properly configured). Save and close design when finished.

  • Send Design: There are three options for sending the design back to the Enterprise. The first option is the easiest and most commonly used. 1) Use the Send Design task or button to select a user and send the design to the enterprise. 2) Use the Submit Mobile Design task to assign the session to an approval officer. 3) Use the Send Design to Enterprise task to send the design to an enterprise designer.

  • Send/Receive Mobile Data (optional): If your administrator has configured Geodatabase Replication to automatically send and receive designs, this step is not necessary. Otherwise, execute the the Send/Receive Mobile Data task to send data to the enterprise (and retrieve any data sent from the enterprise). This final task requires a network connection.
