Create Connections

  1. Start Editing by opening a session or design.
  2. Click the Connection Manager button on the Fiber Manager toolbar.
  3. Use the Connection Manager  cursor to hover over a fiber feature until it highlights, then click it. The Connection Manager dialog opens.

    TIP: If you select a feature that contains conflicts, the Connection Conflict Resolution tool opens.
  4. Use the map and the right and left drop-down menus to select the two features that you want to view and edit.

    The following example shows two of the three fiber optic cables spliced at this location (35th and Scott, whose name is displayed in the title bar). This example concerns the connections between the South 35th and North 35th fiber optic cables.

  5. For the connections you're about to create, select attribute values for Tray, Splice Type, and Attenuation Loss given the Splice Type. These values are applied to upcoming connections, and they persist until you change them.
    TIP: You can set Attenuation Loss defaults for each Splice Type. In other words, once you choose a Splice Type, the loss values populate automatically, saving you time and ensuring light loss accuracy. See the topic Fiber User Settings for more information.
  6. Navigate up and down the two sides of Connection Manager to find the available connections on both sides.
    TIP:

    • In the lower, left-hand corner of the dialog, check the box Hide unavailable items to reduce the visible connections.

    • If you are using a work order and have the strand numbers listed, type them into the filter using the Strand_Num column. For example, the follow image shows a Strand_Num filter of [49–52].

  7. Stubs represent unconnected (available) fibers. To connect a stub, hover over the stub to display a blue dot. Click the stub to select it.
  8. Click a stub on the other side to complete the connection.

    TIP: There are alternate ways to create connections in Connection Manager.

    • Use the Autoconnect button to create connections between all available stubs on either side of the Connection Manager. This tool starts at the top of each list and works downward until there are no remaining available stubs in one of the lists. Note that Autoconnect forms connections for all available, corresponding strands, even those not displayed in the visible portion of the form.

    • Use the Shift and Control keys to simultaneously select multiple contiguous and non-contiguous stubs, respectively. Then click a stub on the other side where you want to start connecting each selected stub. Note that intervening squaps halt the connection creation process.

  9. Click OK to save the edits and exit the form, or click Apply to save the edits and keep the form open.
  10. Continue to make connections. Click Close when done.
  11. Save your edits.
