Installation

Before following the installation instructions for the transition section, refer to the following sections in instruction bulletin no. 46010-519 (PremSet™ Medium Voltage Switchgear):

Equipment Installation

DANGER
hazard of electric shock, explosion, or arc flash
  • Apply appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe electrical work practices. See NFPA 70E, NOM-029–STPS-2011, or CSA Z462.
  • This equipment must be installed and serviced only by qualified electrical personnel.
  • Perform such work only after reading and understanding all of the instructions contained in this bulletin.
  • Turn off all power supplying this equipment before working on or inside equipment.
  • Always use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm power is off.
  • Before performing visual inspections, tests, or maintenance on this equipment, disconnect all sources of electric power. Assume all circuits are live until they are completely de-energized, tested, and tagged. Pay particular attention to the design of the power system. Consider all sources of power, including the possibility of backfeeding.
  • Always practice lock-out/tag-out procedures according to OSHA requirements.
  • Carefully inspect your work area, and remove any tools and objects left inside the equipment.
  • Replace all devices, doors, and covers before turning on power to this equipment.
  • All instructions in this bulletin are written with the assumption that the customer has taken these measures before performing maintenance or testing.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.

Joining and Connecting Transition Section to Transformer, Motorpact MV Motor Controllers, and Metering Bay

  1. For joining and anchoring shipping sections, follow the steps below and refer to “Section 7: Switchgear Installation” in instruction bulletin no.
    46010-519 (PremSet™ Medium Voltage Switchgear).

  2. Review the assembly drawings to ensure the shipping sections are assembled in the correct order.

  3. Locate the throat side panel that is shipped as a kit on in a separate cradle.

  4. To install the side panels, refer to "Section 7: Switchgear Installation" in instruction bulletin no. 46010-519 (PremSet™ Medium Voltage Switchgear) .

  5. Position or install the cage nuts on the throat side panel using 11 M10 (10 mm) cage nuts.

  6. For connection and coupling details, refer to the instruction bulletin and order drawings of the equipment to be connected.

  7. Once the PremSet lineup is positioned and anchored, proceed to join equipment to be connected using the factory supplied M10 (10 mm) hardware.

  8. Anchor transformer, Motorpact MV motor controller, or metering bay to the concrete pad using the customer supplied anchoring hardware and following the equipment’s instruction bulletin.

Joining the Main and Ground Bus

Install the main bus only after all sections are securely anchored in place and no additional movement of the assembly will occur. Bus bars are shipped with the miscellaneous items.

For main bus and ground bus installation, refer to the section “Locking the Cubicles and Assembling the Cable Shield Ground Bus” in “Section 7: Switchgear Installation” of instruction bulletin no. 46010-519 (PremSet™ Medium Voltage Switchgear).

Cabling or Bussing Power Terminations

DANGER
hazard of electric shock, explosion, or arc flash
  • Apply appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe electrical work practices. See NFPA 70E, NOM-029–STPS-2011, or CSA Z462.
  • This equipment must only be installed or serviced by qualified electrical personnel.
  • Only qualified electrical personnel familiar with medium voltage circuits should perform the instructions in this bulletin. Personnel must understand the hazards involved in working with or near medium voltage equipment.
  • Turn off all power supplying this equipment before working on or inside equipment.
  • Always use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm that the power is off.
  • Replace all devices, doors, and covers before turning on the power to this equipment.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.

Before making the cable connections, determine the phase identity of each cable or bus. The PremSet Close Coupled Transition Section is available with right and left connection options and phases are labeled. Cable connection is used for the transformer coupling application and the bus bar connection is used for the metering bay and transition to Motorpact MV motor controller applications.

For some applications, each bus bar is rated up to 1200 A and incorporates epoxy insulation rated for continuous operation up to 221 °F (105 °C). Polyvinyl chloride boots insulate the connection point, overlapping the epoxy insulation and the cable or bus bar of the equipment. Boots must be in place before operating the equipment

Ground bus:The bare copper ground bus connection is located on the bottom part of the switchgear. The ground bus has a short circuit rating of 2 seconds at 25 kA.

  1. Install one phase at a time by gently positioning the busbar or cable lug toward the PremSet transition section lug pad.

  2. Follow the instructions of the cable manufacturer. Depending on the application, refer to the transformer instruction bulletin or, for busbar connection, the Motorpact MV motor controller instruction bulletin.

  3. Insulated red boots are supplied for cable connection application. These boots are designed with a closed end on one side that must be modified to make an opening to the size of the cable used. The diameter of cable will vary with the size of cable and with the service voltage for each application. The maximum size of the opening is 1 in. (25.4 mm) diameter

  4. For bus bar connection application, special boots are supplied.

  5. After the cable connections are made, tighten the bolts on the joints to the torque value specified in the transformer’s instruction bulletin.

  6. Close the boot joint with tie-wrap (supplied).

  7. Ensure that all cable connections are completed and the red boots and barriers are properly installed.

  8. Proceed with the ground connection. Refer to the transformer or Motorpact MV motor controller instruction bulletin.

DANGER
hazard of electric shock, explosion, or arc flash
  • Do not leave any lug pad uncovered.
  • Ensure that all cable connections are completed and red boots and barriers are properly installed.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.
