Testing and Energizing

DANGER
hazard of electric shock, explosion, or arc flash
  • Apply appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe electrical work practices. See NFPA 70E, NOM-029–STPS-2011, or CSA Z462.
  • This equipment must be installed and serviced only by qualified electrical personnel.
  • Perform such work only after reading and understanding all of the instructions contained in this bulletin.
  • Turn off all power supplying this equipment before working on or inside equipment.
  • Always use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm power is off.
  • Before performing visual inspections, tests, or maintenance on this equipment, disconnect all sources of electric power. Assume all circuits are live until they are completely de-energized, tested, and tagged. Pay particular attention to the design of the power system. Consider all sources of power, including the possibility of backfeeding.
  • Always practice lock-out/tag-out procedures according to OSHA requirements.
  • Carefully inspect your work area, and remove any tools and objects left inside the equipment.
  • Replace all devices, doors, and covers before turning on power to this equipment.
  • All instructions in this bulletin are written with the assumption that the customer has taken these measures before performing maintenance or testing.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.

After the PremSet switchgear lineup has been installed and connected to the downstream equipment, a final check must be conducted before it is put in service.

  1. Turn off all main and control power supplying the equipment.

  2. Examine all control wires to make sure they have not been damaged or loosened.

  3. Perform a loading check of the control circuits. Perform continuity and insulation tests of the switchgear components to ensure proper installation of all primary components.

  4. Remove test power or test voltage and any test lead used on the previous step.

  5. Vacuum every compartment. Remove all loose parts, tools, miscellaneous construction items, and litter.

  6. Verify that all insulating boots are installed.

  7. Replace all of the main bus covers and any other barriers or covers that were removed during installation.

For testing and energizing, refer to the sections “Electrical Testing,” “Hi-Pot Testing,” and “MV Commissioning, Contact Resistance Test” in the “Switchgear Commissioning” section of instruction bulletin no. 46010-519 (PremSet™ Medium Voltage Switchgear). The connection between PremSet Close Coupled Transition Section and the connected equipment (Motorpact MV motor controller, MV transformer, or metering bay) may need to be removed to perform the hi-pot testing. For removal instructions, consult the equipment’s instruction bulletin.
