Fiber Trace

The Fiber Trace tool traces a path of connectivity that was previously established with Connection Manager. The trace uses connectivity information at each junction to determine fibers' paths in both directions. This tool is useful for checking the connectivity of a light path between two points in a system.

You can trace fiber objects with or without directional tracing enabled.

TIP: Enable directional tracing in the ArcFM Fiber settings.

The following sections describe the process for linear tracing and point tracing.

Click the Fiber Trace button on the Fiber Manager toolbar.
Choose which fiber feature classes the flag should snap to on the map. The dialog lists any feature with the FIBEROBJECT model name assigned to it (either point or line). An administrator assigns model names and determines which features are compatible with this tool. Click OK.
If you are not using directional tracing, click a fiber facility on the map to start the process.
If you are using directional tracing, use a two-click selection method to choose a facility and a direction:
1. If tracing a cable, first click the cable that contains the fiber you want to trace. A green dot appears. Then, click on either side of the green dot to determine the direction of the trace.
2. If tracing from a point, first click the facility. A Trace Direction dialog appears to assist in choosing your direction. In the following image, the trace started at a front port. A device is connected to the front, and a fiber is connected to the back. The dialog is asking if you would like to trace toward the device or toward the back port/fiber.

Use the checkboxes in the Trace Selector window to select which fiber strands or ports should be included in the trace.

Decide on your desired trace results:
1. Check the box to Display Trace Path Report if you want to view the report in a web browser.
2. Type a specific wavelength to trace, or leave null to trace all wavelengths on the selected objects.
3. Choose your selection option. There are three possible options:
  - Do not select trace results: Results are not selected on the map. This is helpful when you only want the trace report but not a visual, geographic selection.
    
    IMPORTANT: The combination of not displaying a trace report and not selecting results produces no outcomes, and you receive the following message:
  - Add results to selection: Results are selected in an additive manner. Running additional traces does not clear existing selections, instead they are added to existing selections.
  - Select using Interactive Selection Method: Results will respect the ArcMap Interactive Selection Method. The default method is to clear existing selections and create a new selection, but other choices include Add to Current Selection, Remove from Current Selection, and Select from Current Selection.
TIP: Your choices are automatically saved to the ArcFM System Table MM_PERSIST_INFO. This means your choices persist even after you close and re-open ArcMap.
Click the Trace Selected Items button.
Use the Zoom to Selected Features tool to display the entire trace path.
If you checked Display Trace Path Report, view the Fiber Trace Report in your web browser.
