Secure the Map Service (Optional)

As an optional configuration, you can secure your map service. This requires all users to log in before they can access the service.

At a high level, to secure the published map service, you first set the permissions of the service to private. Then, you modify the underlying Credentials file to include the ArcGIS Server user name and password. Finally, you modify the web.config to include the ArcGIS Server Manager user name and password.

To secure the map service, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to ArcGIS Server Manager.
  2. Click Services, and locate your Wavepoint published map service.
  3. By the Wavepoint service, click the lock icon to Edit Service Security.

  4. In the Edit Permissions dialog, choose Private. Then, decide which roles are allowed to access the service:
    1. You can either check the box to allow access to all users who are logged in.

    2. Or, leave that box unchecked and specify allowed roles.
  5. Click Save.
  6. On the myArcFM page Product Downloads, navigate to the Fiber Manager > Wavepoint download page. There, download the security template file named Credentials.txt.
  7. On the server machine, navigate to the folder C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\bin
  8. In this folder, place the security template file named Credentials.txt.
  9. Open the Credentials.txt file, type the ArcGIS Server Manager user name on the first line and the password on the second line. This is the same user name and same password you use to log into ArcGIS Server Manager (which you did in Step 1 above).

  10. Save and close the Credentials.txt file, and leave it in the folder C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\bin
  11. Finally, modify the web.config to include the ArcGIS Server Manager user name and password. All web.config help topics are organized together in this help guide. See the topic AGS Login and AGS Password to complete this step.
