Safety Precautions

This section contains important safety precautions that must be followed before attempting to work on the electrical equipment. Carefully read and follow all the safety precautions outlined below. All safety precaution items stated here and throughout this user guide must be followed before performing any procedures.

DANGER
Hazard of electric shock, explosion, or arc flash
  • Apply appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe electrical work practices. See NFPA 70E, NOM-029-STPS, CSA Z462, or local equivalent.
  • The equipment must be installed, operated, and serviced only by qualified electrical personnel. Only qualified personnel familiar with medium voltage equipment are to perform work described in this set of instructions. Workers must understand the hazards involved in working with or near medium voltage circuits.
  • Store, install, and operate the electrical equipment only in the environment for which it was designed.
  • Perform work on the equipment only after reading and understanding all of the instructions contained in this and other associated user guides.
  • Turn off all power supplying this equipment before working on or inside equipment.
  • Always use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm power is off.
  • Before performing visual inspections, tests, or maintenance on this equipment, disconnect all sources of electric power. Assume all circuits are live until completely de-energized, tested, and tagged. Pay particular attention to the design of the power system. Consider all sources of power, including the possibility of backfeeding. Also, check interconnection diagrams and make sure there are no potential backfeed sources.
  • Never disconnect the main trip source of energized equipment.
  • Always practice lock-out/tag-out procedures according to OSHA requirements. Use out-of-service tags and padlocks when working on equipment. Leave tags in place until the work is completed and the equipment is ready to be put back into service.
  • Circuit breaker and switch contacts must be open (O OPEN) and all springs discharged before performing maintenance work, disconnection, or removal of a circuit breaker.
  • Move medium voltage circuit breakers to the test/disconnected position before attempting to open the circuit breaker compartment door or any other relevant switchgear doors/covers/panels.
  • Conduct electrical testing to confirm no short-circuits were created during installation, maintenance, or inspection.
  • Do not allow the ambient operating temperatures to exceed the specified limits.
  • Never insert a circuit breaker into a circuit breaker compartment that is not complete and functional.
  • Do not use a circuit breaker that shows signs of damage. Inspect insulator barriers, supports, and covers for cracks prior to use.
  • Use only a circuit breaker that is unmodified, complete, properly rated, and functional.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.
DANGER
Hazard of electric shock, explosion, or arc flash
  • Handle this equipment carefully and install, operate, and maintain it correctly in order for it to function properly. Neglecting fundamental installation and maintenance requirements may lead to personal injury, as well as damage to electrical equipment or other property.
  • Use only genuine Schneider Electric specific tools (charging/racking handle, etc.) to operate the circuit breaker.
  • Make sure all devices, doors, barriers, plates, panels, and covers are in the correct position before operating the circuit breaker, racking the circuit breaker in or out of the connected position, and before turning on power to this equipment.
  • Do not make any modifications to the equipment or operate the system with interlocks or barriers removed. Contact the local Schneider Electric representative for additional instructions if the equipment does not function as described in this user guide.
  • Never go behind the cubicle when it is energized.
  • Do not disassemble the circuit breaker or operating mechanism for service or maintenance work.
  • Beware of potential hazards. Carefully inspect the work area and remove any tools or objects that may have been left on or inside the equipment.
  • The complete assembly arrangement determines if the top or bottom contacts are the line side; one side may be energized when the circuit breaker is open and connected in the compartment.
  • Do not use liquid fire extinguishers or water on electrical fires. Before extinguishing fires within the assembly, be absolutely certain the main power source is disconnected.
  • All instructions in this user guide are written with the assumption that the qualified person has taken the safety measures outlined in this user guide before performing any installation, operation, maintenance, or testing.
  • Observe the handling rules and avoid any shocks to the equipment.
  • Perform the maintenance and servicing operations described in the maintenance section of this user guide.
  • Observe the normal service conditions described in this user guide.
  • Respect the storage conditions of the circuit breaker.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.
