Construct the Splitter Favorite

Fiber Manager supports Splitters that are stand-alone feature classes. However, more commonly Splitters are housed inside Splice Cases. Thus, the steps below demonstrate the latter setup. This means that you actually start the process by constructing a Splice Case, and then creating the related Splitter inside that Case.
  1. In ArcMap, apply a Stored Display that includes your fiber features.
  2. Start Editing.
  3. In the Table of Contents, click the Features pane.
  4. Navigate to the folder that will contain your fiber favorites.
    1. If you do not have a favorite folder yet, right-click a desired location and choose Create Favorite Category, name it, then click OK.

  5. Right-click the favorite folder and choose Create Favorite.

  6. On the Select a Target dialog, choose Splice, then click OK. The Create Favorite dialog opens.
    IMPORTANT: As a friendly reminder, the upcoming Splitter is housed inside a Splice Case. Thus, the process starts at the Splice Case level.
  7. For Description, type a descriptive name such as Splice with 1 x 8 Splitter

  8. Fill out as many common fields as you can for the Splice.
    TIP:
    • This is a favorite that will be used over and over again. You do not want to enter information such as Installed By, Date Installed, or any other unique identifiers, as these vary from Splice to Splice. Instead, focus on attributes that are common for these types of Splices. For example, if your company always uses the same Manufacturer, Contractor, Enclosure Type, etc., fill those fields in as defaults for the fiber users.

    • When creating a favorite, there are many attribute fields to populate. When inside the Create Favorite dialog, press the Up and Down keys to move through the fields, and press the Enter key to activate the field.

    IMPORTANT: You might be wondering if you need to type in the various model names. The answer is no. These automatically populate when you bring the favorite into the ArcFM Attribute Editor > Targets tab, which occurs before you sketch the favorite on the map. In other words, given the auto-updaters assigned to these fields, the application handles the model names fields for you.
  9. Click Apply.
  10. Expand the favorite to see its child relationships.

  11. Right-click Passive Device and choose Add Related Object.
  12. For Description, type a descriptive name such as 1 x 8 Splitter
  13. Fill out as many common fields as you can for the Splitter
  14. Click Apply.
  15. Expand the Splitter to see its relationships.

  16. Create the Common Port, which is the single port that facilitates the split to many wavelengths
    1. Right-click Common Port and choose Add Related Object
    2. For Description, type a descriptive name such as Input Port 1
    3. Fill out as many common fields as you can for this Port
      IMPORTANT: The number you enter for Port Number is critical, as this is the same number you enter for all the outgoing Split Ports later. In other words, if you enter the number 1 here, enter the number 1 as the connection port for the upcoming Split Ports.

      IMPORTANT: A quick note about the Sides field: The entries of F and B indicate whether you want to view the Front or Back facet of the device (or FB for both front and back). In the case of a pigtail Splitter in a Splice enclosure, this facet information is not seen or used in the Patch Panel report or in Wavepoint . Thus, you can leave the field empty for that kind of Splitter. Conversely, if the Splitter is housed on a Rack, the sides should be set to F for both the Common and Split Ports.
    4. Click Apply.
  17. This has been a good amount of work so far, and it would be wise to save at this point:
    1. In the Create Favorite dialog, click Create, then click Close.
    2. On the Editor toolbar, click Editor > Save Edits.
    3. When prompted to save changes to feature favorites, click Yes.
    4. To continue editing the favorite, in the Table of Contents > Features pane, right-click the Splice and choose Edit Favorite.
  18. Create the first Split Port with common attributes:
    IMPORTANT: Much like building a Patch Location favorite, you first create a single port with shared attributes. Then, you copy it several times. Finally, you return to provide the unique attributes for each port.
    1. Right-click the Split Port relationship and choose Add Related Object.

    2. Add as many common fields as possible. You can leave the Description alone for now.

      IMPORTANT: The most critical field is Implied Alignment. This field should equate to the same number used for the Input Port, which in this topic, was the number 1. This informs the application that these Split Ports are connected to the Input Port 1.
    3. Click Apply.
  19. With the first template port created, it is time to copy and paste it seven times to arrive at eight total Split Ports. To do so:
    1. Right-click the Passive Device Split Port and choose Copy.

    2. Click once on the Split Port relationship to highlight it in blue.

    3. Press Ctrl + V to paste.
    4. Repeat the Paste procedure until you have eight Split Ports.

    5. Save your favorite, then return to editing the favorite.
  20. Now that you have created the eight Split Ports with common attributes, it is time to visit them individually and add the unique attributes.
    1. Click the top-most Passive Device Split Port so it is highlighted in blue.
    2. For Description, type a descriptive name such as Split Port 01
    3. Add the unique attributes such as Port Name, Port Position, and Port Number (which in this case, would all be the number 1)
      IMPORTANT: Port Position is particularly important as this determines where the port is drawn on both the Patch Panel Connection report and in the Wavepoint interface.
    4. Click Apply.
    5. Click the next Passive Device Split Port so it is highlighted in blue.
    6. Repeat the procedure, this time using the number 2.
    7. Continue until all 8 ports have unique attributes.

    8. Perform a final click-through of all ports, ensuring they all have an Implied Alignment of 1 and unique Port Names/Positions/Numbers ranging from 1 to 8.
    9. Click Apply, then OK.
  21. Save the favorite.
