Defaults for Fiber Settings
You can configure system-wide settings to promote a uniform application experience and data integrity for all users.
The Fiber Manager settings you apply in ArcCatalog establish the settings in ArcMap for all users connecting to the same database. Regarding administrative and end user settings, keep the following in mind:
-
The first time you establish administrative settings, they override any settings chosen by end users.
-
From that point forward, end users can change their settings, if needed.
-
End user settings persist session to session and are saved to their individual login in the MM_PERSIST_INFO system table. They are not applied to other end users.
-
If you update administrative settings again, they once again override any settings chosen by end users.
To establish system-wide settings, follow these steps:
- Open ArcCatalog.
- Connect to your geodatabase as an administrator.
- With the geodatabase highlighted in blue in the Catalog Tree, click the ArcFM Fiber Settings tool.
-
Use the Fiber System Settings dialog to establish settings
for all users.

Use Directional Tracing: Directional tracing allows you to determine the direction the trace travels. When this option is disabled, the trace is a one-click process and travels in all available directions. If directional tracing is enabled, the trace is a two-click process: the first click establishes the feature to trace, and the second click establishes the direction to trace.
Splice Type and Default A/B Loss: These fields work in conjunction and allow you to set the default light loss by splice type. These loss values appear in Connection Manager and are applied when users create splice connections.
TIP: The splice type choices come from the SpliceType domain. To set a default splice type for all users, ensure that specific type is the first coded value in the domain. By making it the first value, it becomes the default type.To set the loss values, follow these steps:
-
Choose a Splice Type.
-
Type values for Default A and Default B Loss.
-
Click Apply.
-
Choose a different Splice Type, and repeat the same steps.

-
Display Connection Manager Disconnect Warnings: When users disconnect a particular feature that is not commonly disconnected (for example, the Backside Port), they can be presented with a warning. Deselect this option if you want to suppress the warning message. To determine which fiber features trigger this warning, assign the SUPPORTSDISCONNECTWARNING model name.
-
Display Sheath Length Warnings: Cable lengths come from four possible configurations: GIS Length + Slack Loops, Footstamps, Documents/Field Notes, or OTDR Length. All of these choices, except for GIS Length + Slack Loops, are calculated based upon attribute fields. For example, if set to Footstamps there are Start Cable Length Mark and End Cable Length Mark fields, and the application uses those values to calculate the length.
When a cable is split by a splice case, two cables are produced, and all the attributes are copied onto both cables. However, this is incorrect for the length field (if it is driven by attributes) because both cables would maintain the original length even after the split. Thus, when a cable is split the application resets the length to GIS Length + Slack Loops for both resulting cables. You can then update each cable’s length, if needed.
This checkbox does not turn on or off this functionality. It only displays or suppresses the message about the functionality.
If the split cable’s length is set to GIS Length + Slack Loops from the beginning, this issue does not apply and the message does not display regardless of your choice in the settings.
-
Update availability along circuit path: Check this box to update all fiber facilities and strands in the circuit to respect the availability attribute chosen in Circuit Manager. When creating a circuit, this field is typically set to “unavailable” to indicate to all users that the fiber facilities and strands are part of a dedicated circuit and should not be disconnected arbitrarily.

- When finished establishing settings, click OK. The next time an end user logs into the database, the administrative settings are applied to their end user settings.
