Phase Propagation

Phase propagation in the Utility Network (UN) uses the ‘Propagated_BITWISE_AND’ operation and a phase field configured as a network attribute to create phase values, PhasesNormal (Input) , DeviceStatus (Input), and PhasesEnergized (Output) from the source of the subnetwork and sends that information to the service points. The tier’s trace configuration determines which features are barriers and which features the trace can pass through.

For a technical description of this type of attribute propagation, see Attribute Propagation in the Utility Network.

The PhasesNormal attribute identifies the named electrical phases A, B, and C that are present and operational for each object in the ArcFM UN electric model. The phase names can be customized with a coded value domain in the UN so that a different letter or word is used for each of the three phases. Some distribution utilities use the phase names R, Y, and B where others may use L1, L2, and L3. This attribute is present on every feature and object in both the balanced and the unbalanced electric models. The PhasesNormal attribute is a short or long integer field that is designated as a network attribute in the UN. Make sure the least significant three bits are declared as in-line bits in the UN’s in-line attribute bit-space and represents one of the named electrical phases.

We expect Phase propagation to be set up as follows:

Required Configuration

  • The PhaseNormal attribute must be added to all Electric Domain Network feature classes and Domain Network object classes to support the ArcFM UN.

ArcFM AUs implement a feature so that on the North American Model, the Device is kept in sync with the units.

  • Unbalanced network: PhasesNormal on the bank represents aggregation of phases among the units. PhasesNormal on a unit represents the phase that it controls.

  • Balanced network: PhasesNormal is on the bank. (Device)

  • DeviceStatus indicates whether the Device or Unit is open/closed.

  • PhasesEnergized is set by UpdateSubnetwork using PhasesNormal and DeviceStatus to determine which set of phases reaches the Bank or Unit.

  • The value coded domain for the PhasesNormal attribute should be configured as shown in this table.

The domain assigned to the PhasesNormal field differs from the domain used by the EnergizedPhases field, since the proper interpretation of the value zero is different between those two fields. For information about setting the network attribute, see the Phase Propagator in Trace Configuration topic.

Impact onArcFM

  • Designer XI depends on a phases normal field.

  • Editor XI Tracing & Phase Swap depend on a phases normal field.

  • We transfer Phases Normal from ArcFM to ADMS.
