Voltage Regulator Attributes

A voltage regulator is a component of the distribution system that ensures a steady constant voltage supply through all operational conditions. It regulates voltage during power fluctuations and variations in loads. Heavy electrical loads and long distribution lines drag down system voltages. Voltage regulators enable utilities to maintain voltage levels within acceptable ranges, giving utility customers the assurance that electrical equipment will operate properly. Voltage regulators provide 32 steps, 5/8 percent per step, for a total regulation of +/- 10% of system voltage.

Single-phase step-voltage regulators can be applied in wye- and delta-connected systems. In delta-connected systems, the open and closed delta configurations are available in an open delta configuration and two regulators are connected to regulate all three phases. In closed delta configuration, three regulators are used to regulate between the phases.

Description

Voltage Regulators

E:Voltage Regulation

ElectricDevice; Electric Junction Object

Applies to a feature in the Electric Device table that represents a voltage regulator, as well as to all JunctionObject Asset Groups and Asset Types that represent a contained, phase-associated unit (which may be a single-phase unit or a three-phase unit) of a voltage regulator bank

Voltage Regulator Bank and Units

A voltage regulator feature in the Device feature class in the electric domain network represents a bank of up to three single-phase voltage regulator units, or a single unit that represents all three phases (ABC).

Required Configuration

  • Voltage Regulators must be in-line.

  • Voltage Regulators must have two terminals.

  • User must set up a terminal configuration in the network properties that is directional and then apply this terminal configuration to the Asset Group Asset Types that are voltage regulators.

  • Set the TerminalConfiguration attribute to None for voltage regulators that are bank devices in the E:Has Connected Units network category.

  • Set the TerminalConfiguration attribute to All for voltage regulators that contain units in the E:Has Disconnected Units network category that do not participate in connectivity.

  • Set the TerminalConfiguration attribute to All for voltage regulators in the E:Has Connected Units or E:Has Disconnected Units network category that do not contain units.

  • The units of a Voltage Regulator bank are stored in the JunctionObject table in the electric domain network.

  • Units

    • Each unit is contained by the bank feature (with a containment association in the UN).

    • Each unit is connected directly across two of the voltage regulator’s terminals to represent the voltage transformation function between the terminals.

    • Each unit carries a single named phase in its PhasesNormal attribute.

    • In the case of a symmetrical three-phase voltage regulator bank, the bank may contain a single unit that represents all three phases (ABC).

Description

Sample Data

PhasesNormal

Integer

Domain coded value. Value should reflect the combination of the phases that are covered by the contained voltage regulator units.

RatedKVA

Floating Point

Total kVA rating for the bank (adding up kVA ratings of the units)

25

50

300

VoltageGroup

Integer

Domain coded value. Indicates the operating voltage at the In Bushing terminal of the Regulator, and should match the VoltageGroup code of each external feature (i.e. not counting the units) that is connected to the Primary terminal.

Voltage Regulator Unit Attributes

These unit attributes are implied by the Voltage Regulator Unit network category, and are found in the JunctionObject table and are used by the rows in that table that represent units belonging to a voltage regulator bank.

PhasesNormal

Integer

Domain coded value. Value should be a single phase, except when the unit represents a three-phase voltage regulator.

RatedKVA

Floating Point

kVA rating for the unit (total kVA rating for the bank if this is a three-phase voltage regulator unit).
