Create Duct Banks and Ducts

Once the diagram's floor and walls have been created, add duct banks and configure the ducts.

Configure and Create

This option allows the user to specify the number and size of ducts in the bank as well as the duct bank dimensions.

  1. Expand Create Duct Banks and Ducts step.
  2. Select the Configure and Create task.
  3. Type duct and duct bank criteria.

  4. Click the Add Duct Bank button.
  5. Click the wall on which you want to add the duct bank. If you want to add multiple duct banks, click the Add Duct Bank button before clicking the diagram for each bank.
    TIP:

Do your duct numbers look a little funny?

Their label placement is probably set to “straight” or “curved,” when it should be “horizontal.” To check, go to the duct’s Layer Properties > Labels > Placement Properties (or, if using Maplex Label Engine, go to Layer Properties > Labels > Placement Properties > Label Position > Position). There, ensure it is set to Always Horizontal (or, if using Maplex Label Engine, ensure it is set to Horizontal). That aligns the labels to be more readable:

Create Opposite

This tool allows you to click a duct bank, navigate to the facility on the opposite end of the conduit, and place a duct bank with the same attributes. If duct banks exist on both ends of the conduit and the conduit is associated with them, this tool will not work. The next facility must also have a floor and walls. If it doesn't the user will receive a message and the duct bank cannot be created.

TIP: This tool does not create a duct bank in the facility diagram originally displayed. It creates the duct bank in the next facility diagram.
  1. Expand Create Duct Banks and Ducts step.
  2. Select the Create Opposite task.

  3. Select the Place Opposite Duct Bank button.
  4. Click the duct bank in the current diagram that you want to duplicate. It will be copied to the facility diagram on the opposite end of the conduit.

  5. The map navigates to the facility diagram at the opposite end of the conduit. Click the spot on this diagram at which you want to place the duct bank.
  6. The duct bank is placed. If you want to return to the original diagram, use the Navigate to Previous Facility button.

Flip Duct Bank View in Diagram Manager

You can reverse the view of a duct bank diagram to match the numbering of its opposite pair. For example, in the following image, notice both duct diagrams in the connected manholes use the same numbering configuration. In fact, this is incorrect, as one manhole should have the opposite numbering configuration to reflect the true installation in the field:

After using the flip tool, notice the duct diagram in MH201 is flipped to show the opposite numbering configuration of MH200:

TIP: If adding new duct banks, use the Create Opposite tool so that the paired duct bank is added with the opposite number from the beginning. The flip tool discussed in this topic is to update and correct existing duct banks.

To flip the duct bank view, follow these steps:

  1. Using the Launch Underground Facility Manager tool, click the underground structure where you need to flip the duct bank diagram.
  2. In the Diagram Manager, click Edit Duct Bank.

  3. Toward the bottom of Diagram Manager, click the Select Duct Bank to Flip tool.

  4. Bring your cursor into the map, then click the duct bank that needs to be flipped (the duct bank highlights in green in response to your cursor).

  5. Confirm the numbering has been flipped, and Save your edits.

Duct Bank Favorites

Use this option to select an existing composite favorite from which your duct bank is created. Duct banks may be added to the list using the Create Favorites step.

  1. Expand Create Duct Banks and Ducts step.
  2. Select the Duct Bank Favorites task.

  3. Select a composite favorite in the bottom window.
  4. Click the Add Duct Bank button.
  5. Click the wall on which you want to add the duct bank. If you want to add multiple duct banks, click the Add Duct Bank button before clicking the diagram for each bank.
TIP: When adding a duct bank favorite to an existing butterfly diagram, the duct bank automatically rotates to match the angle of the wall on which it is placed. Further, the duct numbering automatically updates to reflect the proper orientation on each wall. For example, in the following image notice the angle of the duct banks matches the walls, and further notice that duct #1 is positioned so that if a person were in the manhole and looking directly at each wall, duct #1 would always be in the upper, left-hand corner.

After the initial placement, use standard editing tools to move and rotate the bank or individual ducts, as needed.

Create Duct Banks from Conduit

This option uses the existing conduit configuration to create a duct bank. When you use this option to create a duct bank, the conduit is automatically associated to the resulting duct bank.

  1. Expand Create Duct Banks and Ducts step.
  2. Select the Create Duct Banks from Conduit task.

  3. The bottom window displays all configured conduit associated with the underground structure. When the user selects a conduit, it is highlighted on the map. Select a conduit.
