Best Practices Before Editing

Schneider Electric recommends the following best practices before you edit any map.

  • Turn off the ArcGIS Pro “editing by default” feature.

  • Always perform fiber edits within a Session.

IMPORTANT: Your Fiber Manager XI login must be the same as the login you use for Session Manager. Mixing logins produces errors when you attempt to save your work.

Turn Off Default Editing

The default behavior in ArcGIS Pro is to allow editing without any designation by the end user. When a project opens, you have the capability to edit features and attributes.

Schneider Electric recommends you turn off this behavior so that you open a project in view-only mode.

To turn off this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, click the Project tab.

  2. Click Options.

  3. In the Project dialog, click Application > Editing.

  4. Expand the Session subset of options.

  5. Check the box to “Enable and disable editing from the Edit tab.”

The application opens in view-only mode, and waits for you to create a session to initiate editing. See set session edit options for more information about these settings.

Create a Session or Open an Existing Session

Editing against the default version of the database is not recommended. Instead, you should perform edits within a Session. This gives you a “sandbox” to work within so that you are not accidentally editing the shared data in error. Further, it gives you the chance to have your edits approved before they are incorporated into the shared database.

To create a Session, follow these steps:

  1. On the Main Menu > Session Manager tab, click Session Manager.

  2. Click Add New .

  3. Type a Session Name and a Session Description, then click Save.

  4. Click Open Session .

  5. Click the Edit tab to verify your Edit tool is enabled.

If not, click the Edit tool once to enable editing.
