Directional couplers are typically two- or three-port devices for unequally dividing signal between two paths. These can also be used to combine signals with more loss in one input than in the other, with the signal from the high-loss port being routed to only one of the other two ports. This is particularly helpful when there is a need to drop the signal slightly to feed a smaller number of customers.
