Responder Trace Tools
Available in ArcMap.
Responder includes three tracing tools in ArcMap. These trace tasks are utilized by Responder and its prediction engine to analyze the network and determine affected loadpoints and calculate prediction ratios. They are displayed in the Customize dialog under Responder Commands to allow users to perform these traces as well.
To perform a trace, do the following:
- Select the appropriate trace from the Responder toolbar.
- Click a device on the map to identify the start point.
All traces use the same cursor (see below). The blue dot in the middle snaps to selectable devices. A layer must be set as selectable before this tool can snap to its features. Ensure the cursor has snapped to the device before clicking.
Trace results are highlighted in red on the ArcMap.
NOTE: These traces treat confirmed incident devices as barriers.-
Find Source: This trace identifies the path to the feeder source. If loops exist in the path, it shows those as well. Click a device. All edges and devices that must be passed through to reach the source are highlighted. Highlights do not appear if a path does not exist.

Find Downstream Features: This trace identifies all junctions and edges downstream of the start point. If a confirmed incident device exists downstream, it acts as a barrier to the trace.

Find Immediate Children: This trace identifies all the devices directly connected to the device on which the trace was started. For example, if a user clicks a fuse to begin a trace, all of the transformers connected to that fuse are returned in the trace results. However, the loadpoints connected to the transformers are not included.
Responder traces include confirmed faults as well as unconfirmed/probable devices. This allows you to perform before/after confirmation traces.
