Create Markup Map Document
Now that you have your data prepped, you're ready to start working in ArcMap and creating a map document to be used in the application.
If you have downloaded the .mxd provided as part of the ArcFM Markup Sample Data, and your organization isn’t using federated markup services, you can skip steps 1–3 below. However, you need to repair the data sources of the layers. You can then alter the symbology, labels, transparency, etc., of layers, as detailed below.
- Open ArcMap, then open a new map document.
- Add the desired markup feature classes to your map document.
- Ensure that the following layers have exactly these names:
-
Dimension Line (two words, one space in between): this layer creates a tool for placing a dimension line in the map and typing a length value.
-
Callout (one word, no hyphen, no spaces): this layer creates a tool for text entry in a callout box.
-
Freehand (one word, no spaces): this layer (also known as handwriting) creates a tool that allows for drawing freely in the map.
-
- Define the desired symbology for each feature class.IMPORTANT: Only simple symbology is allowed.
If subtypes were defined for the feature class, different symbols may be defined here to differentiate markup graphics on the map. The three images below show: a) different symbologies defined for subtypes of the Line feature class; b) how the feature class looks in ArcMap's Table of Contents; and c) how the feature class is displayed in the application.
IMPORTANT:-
If you wish to take advantage of point symbol rotation capabilities in ArcFM Mobile for Windows, your markup symbology must include a field called SymbolRotation that corresponds to the appropriate symbology attributes in ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap. For more information, see Esri’s documentation on how to Vary symbology by rotation (ArcGIS Pro) or Setting label rotation using a numeric field (ArcMap).
-
Dimension lines can only support arrowheads if the markup feature service is published in ArcGIS Pro. If you publish markup features in ArcMap, dimension lines will not display arrowheads in ArcFM Mobile even if the feature service is configured with arrowheads.
-
- Set the Display Expression Field on the Display tab.
- If the feature class is Dimension Line, the Display Field must be set to Measurement.
- If the feature class is Callout, the Display Field must be set to Notes if your markup dataset is hosted in an Oracle database. The field may be called Notes or Comment if your markup dataset is hosted in a SQL Server database.
- If you would like your feature to include transparency, set the Transparent % on the Display tab.
- For the Dimension Line layer, configure labels for your
markup features on the Labels tab:
- Check the box next to Label features in this layer.
- Select Measurement from the drop-down as the Label Field.
- Make sure the required fields GlobalID, ObjectID, RedlineID, Shape, and Shape.STLength() are set to visible (checkboxes are checked as in the example below). If the feature class has subtypes, make sure SubtypeCD is set to visible as well. Fields that you want available for attribute entry during markup must be set to visible here.
- Repeat the above set of instructions for each of the feature classes. When completed, all of your markup feature classes should be listed in the Table of Contents, in preparation for the next step.
- Save this map as an .mxd file for later reference.TIP: The .mxd can be used as a template for the display of captured markups in ArcFM.
