Configure Tile Packages

Traditional tile packages are sets of tiles (images) pieced together to create a basemap. Vector tile packages by definition are smaller in size, faster for you to generate, and faster for your users to download. Refer to Esri’s additional advantages for further details.

Use ArcFM to create a traditional tile package and ArcGIS Pro to create a vector tile package. Then use Solution Center to upload the tile package.

Create a Traditional Tile Package

Before creating the tile package, be sure to zoom out to the full extent of the basemap data you want to share in the tile package. The tile package generator starts from your current view extent and works its way down. So if you are zoomed in to a certain area, it excludes the areas outside the current view extent and only exports tiles for the area within it.

IMPORTANT: By default, ArcFM Mobile uses a basemap to set the spatial reference of the map view. Basemaps must be created with WGS 1984 Web Mercator, and other maps layers are reprojected to that spatial reference. However, you have the option to configure a different spatial reference to be used by all maps. Refer to the Solution Center Spatial Reference topic.

  1. In ArcFM, check under File > Share As for a Tile Package option. If there, skip to step 5.

  2. Select Customize > ArcMap Options.
  3. On the Sharing tab, select the Enable ArcGIS Runtime Tools checkbox.

  4. Click OK. You should now have a Tile Package option under File > Share As.
  5. With the map you want to serve as a basemap loaded in ArcFM, select File > Share As > Tile Package.
  6. In the Tile Package window, select a location to save the file to disk.

  7. Set desired values in the Tile Format and Item Description tab views.
  8. Click Analyze and fix any errors that ArcFM finds.
  9. Click Share. Next, you need to upload the package in Solution Center.

Refer to Esri’s ArcGIS documentation for details on creating a vector tile package.

Upload a Tile Package

The Tile Packages tab in Solution Center shows you all existing packages. Each tile package in the list has a Display Name and Size.

Take it for a drive!

(The link opens/switches to the Solution Center app, accesses the Tile Packages tab,

and initiates a new tile package.)

  1. Click the Add button and provide an appropriate Display Name.

  2. Click Choose File and browse to the file that you saved locally when you were working in ArcFM. Click Upload.
  3. Upon upload, the tile package displays in the left scrollable frame, and when you click on it, you can view the total package size or delete it entirely.

Once your tile package has been uploaded, next you need to add it to an offline package to make it available for download to ArcFM Mobile users.
