Initial Considerations

  1. Have you requested an ArcFM XI series tenant? Every organization needs a tenant for data security, user management, etc. For information about how to request a tenant and the information you initially need by reviewing the entirety of the Request a Tenant topic.
  2. Do you have ArcGIS Server? This back-end server software component of ArcGIS Enterprise makes your geographic information available to others in your organization and, optionally, anyone with an internet connection. It is specifically required in order to host map content. For requirements, refer to Esri’s ArcGIS Server Installation Guide article.
  3. Do you have Portal for ArcGIS? This enables you to organize, publish, and share maps, apps, and data within your organization, as well as manage user access and permissions. It is specifically required for authentication to XI series apps. For requirements, refer to Esri’s Portal for ArcGIS Installation Guide.
  4. Are you aware of XI series supported version information on myArcFM?
  5. Do you have ArcGIS Desktop and/or ArcGIS Pro (Utility Network)? They are required on at least one desktop machine to publish map content to ArcGIS Server. Geometric Network implementations additionally require Esri ArcGIS Runtime. Refer to Esri’s ArcGIS Desktop quick start guide and ArcGIS Pro quick start tutorials to review all the components that you need, what’s included in the install, and any additional extensions that need licensed.
  6. Do you have ArcFM Desktop? It is required on at least one desktop machine for a Designer XI Geometric Network implementation and/or to enable ArcFM Mobile network tracing functionality.
  7. What functionality do your users require? Refer to the User Functionality Matrix on myArcFM for details on different types of roles and their access.
  8. Do you have separate servers for ArcGIS Server and ArcFM Mobile services? We recommend hosting them on two separate machines.
  9. What types of devices do your users have? For device requirements, refer to the supported version information in myArcFM on the ArcFM Mobile product page.
  10. Which method are you going to use to install the ArcFM Mobile client? A single user install is intended for one-user devices, while multi-user installs are intended for devices that may be used by multiple users, each having their own login. See Client Considerations for more information.
  11. Do you have ArcFM Solution Center installed? It is required for configuring operational maps, basemaps, tile packages, offline packages, markups, users, and API keys.
  12. Does your geodatabase use Global IDs for identifiers? They are required and should be added at the dataset level. See Add Global IDs for more information. However, if your relationships are currently maintained via a user-managed field rather than an Esri-managed field, there is no need to migrate your relationship classes to use Global IDs.
  13. Do your users need to use network tracing functionality? If so, offline configuration is required. Refer to Offline Considerations.
  14. Do your users need to work in areas of partial or no connectivity? If so, offline configuration is required. Refer to Offline Considerations.
  15. Do your users need to use markups for map corrections or for generating other feedback that needs provided back to your organization? If so, markup configuration is required. Refer to Markup Considerations.
