Create Operational Map From Feature Service

If you have a URL for a published map service, you can add it to the list of Operational Maps.

You need the map’s URL before proceeding.

TIP: You can quickly find your map’s URL in ArcGIS Server Manager > Services > Capabilities.

To add a new map, follow these steps:

  1. In Solution Center, click Feeder Services. On Maps tab, for the Network Feature Service, click Add. This brings you to the Operational Maps tab within the Mapping plug in.
  2. Enter a name in the Display Name field. This name appears throughout the other XI series application plugins, so use a short but descriptive name readily identifiable by other administrators and users.

IMPORTANT: An Operational Map can only be used for one purpose in the XI series applications. For example, if it is being used a network feature service, then it cannot also be used as a basemap or reference map. However, you can create multiple Operational Maps from the same map service published to ArcGIS Server. Give them different names, and then you can use it more than once in the applications.

  3. Paste the published map service URL into the URL field.
  4. Enable the toggles for each XI series applications are allowed to access the map.
    1. For Feeder Services, toggle on GDBM/Feeder Services.
  5. Under Machine-to-machine authentication, type the User Name and Password for the ArcGIS Server/Portal user credential.
    IMPORTANT:
    • This is only required if your company is using the hosted Edge Service. If your company is using the on-site Edge Service, this credential is not required and you can leave these fields empty. If in the future your company moves to a hosted Edge Service, this credential can be satisfied at that time.

    • Create a Portal account for these machine-to-machine communications.

      • The Portal account can be the same for all three (Operational Maps, Sync Settings, and Markup Settings). Or, for more granular access control, use a separate Portal account for Sync Settings, Markup Settings, and each Operational Map.

      • For Operational Maps, the Portal account with access to the map service linked to the operational map must have the Esri user type of, at a minimum, Viewer + the UN user type extension. The account may also have a higher Esri user type, as long as you have the UN user type extension.

      • For Markup Settings, the Portal account must have access to all Markup feature services.

      • For Sync Settings, the Portal account must have access to all map services that require offline data.

  6. Click Save.
