Place Cut Point
The Place Cut Point tool adds a cut point on
a conductor.
Click on a conductor (whether part of your design or part of the existing network) to place a cut point. A cut point breaks the line into two parts. If it is a drawn component that is part of your design, it breaks the CU into separate entries in the Project pane and re-calculates the length of the new segments. It does not de-energize the downstream portion of the line.
-
By default, the Electric Cut Point does not come with an associated CU. Thus, when you perform an electric cut, it does not appear in the Project pane in an electric design.
-
However, your administrator can choose to add the relevant CU so that the cost of the cut is attributed in the design, and it does appear in the Project pane. See Electric Cut Point CU for more information.
Two Common Use Cases
-
Replace only a portion of an existing conductor: In the field, you might replace a short section of a conductor, but in the map, that conductor is saved as one, long segment. Placing cut points is a convenient way to replicate the work in the field and preserve the other portions of the conductor. Here is an example workflow (a short video follows the steps):
-
Locate the existing conductor on the map (this workflow is for existing conductors, not conductors sketched as a part of your design).
-
On the Design tab, click the Place Cut Point
tool, then click the conductor to place the cut points. They should mark the begin and end of the section that was replaced.
-
Right-click the segment between the cut point, then choose Replace.
TIP: This same workflow is also applicable with the Modify Equipment tool. -
Click the segment once to set the Upstream start.
-
Click the segment once to set the Downstream end.
-
The CU Search appears. Find the CU to act as the replacement portion of the conductor.
-
Notice, just the segment between the cut points was replaced.

-
Remove a downstream segment from your sketch: In this scenario, you sketched a new conductor, but it is a little too long. You have already finished the sketch, so you cannot revisit it in order to modify its length. This is OK, because you can add a cut point, then delete the extra length. Here is an example workflow (a short video follows the steps):
-
Locate the conductor that is a little too long (in the video below, it is sketched crossing 7th Ave SW, which is incorrect. It should have stopped right before 7th Ave SW.
-
On the Design tab, click the Place Cut Point
tool, then click the conductor where it should have ended.
-
Select the “extra” side of the conductor, then delete. You can confirm in the Project pane that the length has been re-calculated to the new, shorter length.
-
Select the cut point, then delete.
