Replace: Good to Know

The previous topic discusses how to use the Replace tool. This topic describes other helpful features of the tool.

Component Info: Replacement vs. Replaced

As stated in the previous topic, the install CU is placed in the same position as the original component, and the remove CU is offset visually by a small distance so that you can see both the install CU and remove CU at the same time. However, in the field, these two CUs are coincident with each other. Thus, when you click either the install or remove CU, you are prompted to choose which one you want to view in the Component Information pane.

For example, in the image below, the secondary overhead was clicked. Because there is an install CU and remove CU for that same secondary overhead, the component prompt has appeared asking which one you would like to view:

You can hover over the choices, and the equivalent conductor highlights on the map. In this case, you know visually which one you are choosing.

After choosing a component, you can toggle between the install and remove CUs in the Component Information pane. Click the Replaced or Replacement button to toggle.

Conductors: Neutral vs. No Neutral

When replacing a conductor, your install CU might or might not have a neutral, depending upon your selection. The Replace tool cursor information lets you know if you are using an install with a neutral or not. Look for the “+N” within the cursor information to confirm you are placing a neutral in addition to the conductor.

  • With a Neutral:

  • Without a Neutral:

You can also look at the CUs in the Project pane to see whether or not a neutral was placed for that component.

Design Tab Tool vs. Click Wheel Tool

The tool is located on both the Design tab and the Click Wheel.

  • The Click Wheel Replace tool is provided for convenience, and it provides the same functionality as the tool on the Design tab.

IMPORTANT: If you use the Replace tool from the Click Wheel and change the phasing in an indeterminate way, the application prompts you to choose phasing. For example, if you right-click a single phase and Replace, and then you choose a two-phase CU as the install, the application asks you to choose the two phases you require.

  • The Replace tool on the Design tab remembers the most-recently chosen replace CU. This is useful if you have subsequent replacements to make of the same type within the same design. For example, you replaced some overhead conductors, but then you moved on to other tasks in the design. If you realized you needed to replace more of the same conductors, you can click the Replace tool on the Design tab, and it is already primed with the previous replace CU.

IMPORTANT: The Replace tool on the Design tab only remembers the most-recently chosen replace CU. It does not remember the full catalog of replace CUs used within the design. To change the CU, press F (or click your middle mouse button). This brings up the CU Search.
