Create Duct Flag

The Create Duct Flag tool creates an easy to read diagram to view a duct bank from the ArcGIS Pro map view without having to use the Conduit Manager Layout Editor pane. The diagram is referred to as a "flag" because it sticks up from the Duct Bank line much like a flag does.
  1. Click the Create Duct Flag button.
  2. Click the map once on the duct bank structure line where you'd like the duct flag to start. A preview for the duct flag displays and the duct flag automatically starts to snap at a perpendicular placement from the duct bank. You can move your mouse around to adjust the placement so it’s no longer perpendicular to the duct bank. For an even more specific placement that doesn’t keep snapping back to the perfectly perpendicular location, hold down space bar and move your mouse to the exact location you want.
  3. When the duct flag is where you want it, click a second time to place it.

TIP: The tool may take a few moments to create the features for the duct flag.

  4. After completion, the tool creates three different types of features:
    • Structure Line: Duct Flag Leader Line - there are two of these features, one is the line that comes off of the Duct Bank line feature and connects to the Duct Flag Outline. The other feature is a Directional Line, or an arrow that points in the direction of view for the duct bank.
    • Structure Boundary: Duct Flag End - these represent each of the ducts flowing into the duct bank, one feature for each of the ducts present.
    • Structure Boundary: Duct Flag Outline - this is the outer limit of the duct bank as drawn with the Create Duct Bank tool.

The arrow pointing off the duct flag leader line points in the direction you are looking at the duct bank as displayed in the duct flag.

A label also displays which lists the DuctID for each of the occupied ducts (D, E, and I in the example above), as well as the Size, Material, Voltage, Phases. and Subnetworkname for conductors present within the ducts. Labels for unoccupied ducts are not displayed to save space on the map.

If the duct flag layout display is too big or small for your liking, you can adjust the Duct Flag Magnification in Conduit Manager Options.

In the Conduit Manager Options pane, you can set the Duct Flag Magnification to a decimal number < 1000. After you change this setting, you need to recreate the duct flag for the new magnification value to apply to the view.

Each Duct End Flag is symbolized according to its occupancy status. The image below shows the default symbology, however these symbols can be changed to your preferences.

IMPORTANT: The out-of-the-box (OOTB) Duct Flag label configuration is complex. We recommended that you do not adjust the labels for Duct Flags unless you are very familiar with Arcade, or you run the risk of breaking the label all together.

When changes are made to the duct bank (e.g., ducts are added or removed) after the duct flag is created, those changes are also reflected in the duct flag once edits have been saved. An OOTB Attribute Rule ensures feeder information is updated on duct flags as well. See the Attribute Rules topic for additional information about this rule.

If multiple duct banks are found at the first map click location when you place a duct flag, a dialogue opens to show you a list of the duct bank lines found at the selected location.

When you select a duct bank in the list, a line graphic is shown in the map to indicate the geographic path of that selected duct bank.

After you click Place Flag, click again in the map where the flag should go. You see the outline rectangle for the flag, which moves as you move the mouse around the map so that you can see its final placement when you left-click in the map. A single duct bank’s worth of ducts is represented by the resulting set of new GIS features.

If you click Cancel, your recent flag placement is removed and you can click elsewhere in the map to place a flag. Additionally, clicking Cancel clears all graphics from the map that were showing for the duct bank selection.
