XI Series Terminology

Term

Definition

Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS)

This is one of the supported enterprise authentication methods. It is a single sign-on (SSO) solution from Microsoft.

ArcFM Connectivity Evaluator (ACE)

ACE is a Schneider Electric tool that tests connectivity to required web services and, if needed, Azure Service Bus. It can be run as often as needed during the implementation process. Read the ArcFM Connectivity Evaluator (ACE) topic for more information.

Auth0

Auth0 is a third party service provider that enables the use of a large array of identity providers for use in authenticating users. Designer XI utilizes Auth0 behind the scenes, and it is provided as a service managed by Schneider Electric.

Azure Service Bus

An enterprise messaging service used to integrate different systems and pass information among them.

Hosted Service

A service provided in the Azure. For example, instead of having a service hosted at the customer premises on a physical server, it is instead hosted in Azure.

Identity Provider

The mechanism used by a customer to authenticate its users. For example, this could include Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS), ArcGIS Online, Portal for ArcGIS, Windows Azure Active Directory (WAAD), etc. The user types in credentials that are verified by the identity provider. Auth0 is configurable to allow multiple kinds of providers to be displayed, and it is also configurable to have the provider types dynamically change depending on which application the user is logging into.

JSON Web Token (JWT)

A token is akin to a badge bestowed on a user given a situation. For example, an administrator can bear an “administrative JWT,” that accompanies the user among systems. Systems can verify the permission level of that user by verifying the JWT.

On-Premises Service

A service hosted on a server at the customer site.

Mark-up

Temporary graphics and map notes applied to a map, most typically in the field. These can then be sent back to the enterprise GIS for map correction purposes or for additional explanation and insights as a part of a design.

Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML)

This is one of the supported enterprise authentication methods. It is a mechanism for exchanging a user identify from one provider to another via signed XML documents.

Tenant

Tenants are used to isolate customers from each other among the various XI services. Each organization has a Tenant ID, which is commonly the organization name. When a user logs in, the Tenancy Service uses the Tenant ID to direct the user to the proper identify provider.

Services can be single-tenant or multi-tenant.

  • A single-tenant service provides information valuable to only one customer. For example, a published map service with network features is only valuable to the organization that manages those features.

  • A multi-tenant service is more geography based, and is thus valuable to any clients within that same geography. In this case, the tenancy service provides a list of service addresses so that clients are steered toward the multi-tenant service closest to them in geographic proximity. For example, while individual print templates vary from client to client, the actual print template service is multi-tenant as its functionality is the same for all clients. On multi-tenant services, data are partitioned by the Tenant ID.
