Configure Dynamic Spec Behavior
Dynamic Spec Assignment, or “specs on the fly,” is the process of assigning specs to features as they are extracted from the GIS and brought into the design via the Edge service. A GIS Resources Excel table provides the rules for mapping attribute fields to spec IDs. The Excel table is uploaded to Solution Center using Solution Center > Designer plugin > Catalog Tab > Import and Export. If no match to an existing specs is found, a generic ID is assigned. Learn more about this process in the Solution Center GIS Resources topic.
Assigning the spec ID at the time of import prevents concerns that the GIS attribute might become stale and out of sync with the feature as GIS edits are made over time. Further, it is difficult for an administrator to assign the ID to every feature in the GIS. As the spec is assigned on the fly, it is informed by the most up-to-date attributes for the GIS features. Assigning the spec ID as design components are extracted from the GIS makes it easier to maintain the system with future updates.
The Dynamic Spec Assignment process in summary:
-
Run a Feature to Spec Mapping Export.
-
Populate the exported Excel table (for information about the Excel table fields, see GIS Resources).
-
Import the populated Excel table.
