Create Design Region Feature Class

The Design Region feature class ensures that Designer XI users have access to the network subset of interest to a particular design. Dividing a service territory into small regions improves application performance by ensuring that only relevant network features are made available to the designer.

Gas

In a gas implementation, Schneider Electric divides your company’s service area into design regions. These are polygon features that surround gas systems, including all services.

Schneider Electric develops an extension to your company’s Work Management System (WMS) to communicate with these design regions via Job Services. Each new design has an XY coordinate pair, which originates from either a geocoded address or a tap point, and the service determines which design region intersects that coordinate. Then, it imports all devices in that region.

IMPORTANT: The XY coordinates must be in the same spatial reference as the network feature service in the GIS.

The following are required for the design region feature class:

  • It must be a polygon that entirely surrounds a gas system, from source to all services.

  • The polygons cannot overlap each other.

  • The feature class must have a GlobalID field with the field type of GlobalID.

  • The feature class must have a field to serve as the Display Field. We recommend a Name field that users and administrators know. This field is visible in other configurations and in the application. The Display Field is set in the published map service. For the DesignRegion feature class, go to Layer Properties > Display tab > Display Expression Field and choose an appropriate field.

  • It must be included in the Network Feature Service published map service.

  • It must be named DesignRegion in the Table of Contents in the published map service, and it is case sensitive. If you have existing service area polygons that are named something else, you can still use them as long as you rename them DesignRegion in the Table of Contents of the published map service and as long as they meet the other criteria above.

  • Because it is included in the Network Feature Service and because the other feature classes in that service are registered as versioned, the DesignRegion must also be registered as versioned.

Electric

For an electric implementation, feeders are pulled using Feeder ID, which is maintained by Feeder Services in Utility Network implementations or by Feeder Manager in Geometric Network implementations. Thus, a Design Region is optional for an electric implementation, although it might be beneficial for the purposes of Geodatabase Regions.
