Initial Ethernet configuration versus changing existing Ethernet settings

There are two scenarios when configuring your meter’s Ethernet communication settings: initial configuration and changing the existing addresses when the meter is in use.
NOTE:
  • IPv6 support is available only in PM5560 / PM5563 / PM5580 meter models with firmware version 4.5.0 or later.

  • IPv6 setup parameters cannot be configured through ION Setup.

Initial configuration:

  • Configure your meter’s Ethernet settings manually using the display (applicable only for IPv4) or by connecting your meter directly to your computer and using a web browser to access the meter webpages. Alternatively, connect the meter to the network and configure it to use a DHCP server to acquire an IPv4 address.

  • All meters are shipped from the factory with a unique IPv6 link local address and IPv6 gateway. For example, if a meter has the MAC address 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E, its link-local address is fe80::21a:2bff:fe3c:4d5e.

NOTE: During initial configuration, use a connection method other than the one you are configuring. For example, if you are configuring DHCP IPv4 settings, connect to the meter using the IPv6 link-local address or a serial connection. This helps prevent disconnection during configuration.
  • To communicate with the meter using IPv6 outside the local network, must manually configure the required settings through the meter webpages.

Changing existing IP settings:

  • After the meter’s Ethernet port is configured and connected to the LAN, you can configure IPv4 settings using ION Setup, the display, or meter webpages. IPv6 settings can be configured only through meter webpages.

  • Modify the meter’s Ethernet settings to match those provided by your network system administrator before connecting the meter to your LAN.
