Select Behavior in Congested Map Areas

Sometimes map objects, like components and stamp graphics, can overlap partially or completely. When you use the Select Tool to click on the overlapping objects you will be presented with a tooltip. The tooltip displays the number of items in the stack of overlapped objects, the z-order position in the stack, and a keyboard shortcut hint. In the example below, there are six objects in the stack. The first or top-most object is currently selected.

You can cycle through the stack by left-clicking your mouse at the selection point or by pressing A on the keyboard. This behavior is evident on the Design tab and in map edit view on the Layout tab.

As you cycle through the stack of objects, the selected object is highlighted in blue, and the Component Information Panel displays detailed information about the component selected. Once you have the desired object highlighted, click on a blank space on the map or press Esc to exit the stacked selection mode.

See the behavior in action below.

This behavior only applies to overlapping objects. Hidden objects or nearby objects that do not overlap won’t be included in the stack set.

Right-clicking on the highlighted object while cycling through the stack set, multi-select using Ctrl, and Select by Rectangle behave the same as selecting a single object.
